Finding people on Twitter is hard? Not if you read this article

Since we are a company focusing on marketing and social media, we decided to start a new routine where we share with our readers our latest discoveries on social media tools. In marketing, one of the most important things one should consider is target audience. This is an important question that everyone engaging in social media should ask themselves before starting. Who is my target audience?

Social media is definitely formed of a broad range of people connected by their desire to interact. This could be a problem for companies who need to identify target audiences on social media networks. Fortunately, a series of tools have been developed that make the experience of finding the right people on Twitter easier. In the following paragraphs, we will present a range of tools we’ve found and consider useful.

1. Search for people on Twitter.com

It’s the tool that Twitter itself offers its users in order to find people. It is only useful if the name or the account of the person searched for are known because these are the parameters that the Twitter search engine uses.

2. Tweepz

Tweepz is a tool that allows users to find people on Twitter based on keywords selected by the user of the application. As long as they are listed, people found can be grouped into categories, and ranked according to the number of followers, number of people followed or region. We consider this tool very efficient when searching for people located in a certain geographical area or when researching people who share similar interests with your target audience.

3. Tweepsearch

Tweepsearch is a directory which allows a search by account name or bio info. This application also permits sorting the results by number of followers, screen name or number of people following. Tweepsearch also displays a description of each person that was found, providing in the description data the number of followers, number of people following and updates for each person. In this way, a better, clearer picture is displayed about the profile and type of Twitter user the search has found.

4. TwittDir

TwittDir is a Twitter directory that allows searching for people on Twitter based on different criteria. People can be searched by name or account name, location or description. This tool has, as a special feature, the fact that it also provides it’s users with the most followed people and people with the highest number of updates.

5. Tweellow

Tweellow is an application that describes itself as being the Twitter Yellow Pages; it monitors more than 14.6 millions Twitter profiles. It sorts followers according to different categories of interest. It’s a useful search tool for those who are looking for a single specific area, even though search can also be performed by different keywords in certain areas.

6. We follow

We follow is a directory which allows searching for Twitter users according to different tags. It only monitors people that have created a profile of their Twitter account on We follow. We consider this tool relevant only when searching for a specific keyword or tag. Although, when using this tool, there is always the risk of searching for a different tag than the one used by the users that write about the subject you are searching for. If the search is based on very popular tags like “social media” , search result will be extensive, but little relevant.

7. Twubble

Twubble is an application which helps users to find new friends on Twitter based on the principle that “the friend of my friend is also my friend”. We will try to explain how it works using our own account as an example. If, for example, we are following two people related to social media, and these two people follow a third one, we will receive a recommendation to follow the third person. This tool is based on the supposition that the third person also shares a common interest with us.

8. Twitterel

Twitterel is a directory that helps you to find people based on certain keywords that your account highlights as being of  interest. The main disadvantage of this tool is that it only allows accounts to link themselves to keywords that have between 2 and 25 words. You can’t search for more categories at the same time or more keywords.

9. Mr Tweet

Mr Tweet is a directory that not only allows users to find new people on Twitter, but also to finds data about the people an account is following and ways in which interaction with them could be easier. Mr. Tweet also analyses conversations that might be relevant, people who should be targeted according to the field of interest of the account performing the search, or simply a clearer view on the twitter network. This is the best tool we have found so far for finding people and interacting with them.
